The Death of God
Holy Saturday is a day to observe the death of Jesus, literally the death of God. It’s really impossible for us as believers to think about the death of Christ without anticipating his resurrection, but that is what Holy Saturday is about. It’s a day we put ourselves in the shoes (or sandals) of Jesus’ first followers, the day when we wake up and realize that God has died. Now what?
Many today do not even give this day much thought because we already know what happens tomorrow, but this day raises many questions and also shows us much about our faith and why we really follow Christ.
Do we follow Jesus because of his resurrection and the hope for eternal life in heaven someday in the future or do we follow him simply because we are in love with him and believe that no matter what, Jesus’ Way is indeed the best way to live? Do we remain faithful to God even though as far as we know he will remain in the grave or do we resort back to the old ways of doing things?
